About this deal

A View From a Hill (2005, 39 mins, standard definition): a young museum curator, Fanshawe finds himself in possession of a pair binoculars that grant him a strange new ability. Ignoring all warnings about their necromantic creator, Fanshawe carries out his research, but the bloody past of the area is best left undisturbed… As we neared it, Henry Long felt, and I felt too, that there were what I can only call dim presences waiting for us, as well as a far more actual one attending us. Of Paxton's agitation all this time I can give you no adequate picture: he breathed like a hunted beast, and we could not either of us look at his face.” On the Traveller's return, the Signalman informs him that the manner in which he first hailed him was identical to the call of a mysterious apparition, one whose every appearance has been followed by a tragedy. The Traveller attempts to rationalise what he is told as a combination of coincidence hallucination, but the Signalman then reveals that the figure has recently begun to reappear, and he is now fearful that another terrible event will soon occur.

The BFI Ghost Stories restorations were scanned from original 16mm materials (hence they're truly high definition) and are playing at the framerate in which they were originally shot, which is 25fps. This is absolutely the correct way to do it, and we'd have done it exactly the same way. A railway signalman tells a curious traveller how he is being troubled by a spectre that seems to predict calamity. [10] Clark talks enthusiastically about what clearly remains a fondly remembered film, praising the work of writer Andrew Davies, cinematographer David Whitson and lead players Denholm Elliott and Bernard Lloyd (there's also an interesting titbit about Elliott not having learned his lines). His own analysis of the story, and particularly its subtext, is fascinating, and gives a good indication of why this film feels so thematically strong. Phillips-Jones, Richard (21 December 2016). Newly recorded audio commentaries for The Stalls of Barchester and Lost Hearts by Kim Newman and Sean HoganFor Christmas 2008 an original three-part ghost story by Mark Gatiss, Crooked House, was produced instead, though Gatiss has cited the original adaptations as a key influence. Stewart, Helen (23 December 2013). "M. R. James and the tradition of Christmas ghost stories". BBC Arts and Culture . Retrieved 27 December 2013. Commentaries and the 2020 adaptation of Whistle and I’ll Come to You aside, all of the special features have been sourced from the previous BFI DVD releases and are in standard definition. Rounding out the 1 st volume is Lost Hearts, a classic tale of a young orphan plagued by visions of ghostly children as he moves into his older cousin's stately home. At a breezy 35 minutes, the shortest of the four films begins with enjoyably hokey make-up effects before becoming surprisingly graphic for a 1973 television production. Part of the fun of revisiting these old films is not just in how we experience them today, but in thinking how their original audiences would have found them. It's not hard to imagine how many post-Christmas nightmares Lost Hearts would have inspired. BFI/BBC
